VDMX Window Management

From VidvoxWiki

VDMX has a lot of windows. Windows can be moved by clicking and dragging on their title bar or anywhere else along their black frame. When you're moving windows around and resizing them, you'll notice that they snap to each other. If you hold down the command key while dragging a window, it will also move all the windows snapped to it's bottom edge (and all the windows attached to their bottoms, and so on...)- this is useful if you've got vertical stacks, and want to move everything in the stack at once. Holding down option while dragging a window will move all windows snapped to the window being dragged, essentially letting you move contiguous chunks of your interface around as if they were one. Later, you'll find that window positions (as well as whether or not the windows are collapsed) are saved with certain types of presets, allowing you to recreate complicated window arrangements on the fly.

This is important: if, at any point, a window gets positioned offscreen (or behind another window) where you can't reach it, simply select the window from the 'Window' menu, and it will be placed back on your main screen. The "main screen" is the screen with the menubar on it- this can be changed in the system preferences.

Windows may be collapsed either by clicking the disclosure triangle in their top-left corner or by double-clicking on their title bar, and they may be resized by clicking and dragging on the resizing handle in the bottom-right corner. When a window is resized, the default behavior is to resize *only* the affected window, preserving the position of all other windows onscreen. If you hold down the command key while resizing a window, it will move all the windows below it to preserve relative positioning. We strongly encourage you to experiment with window positioning, as it is an important facet of VDMX. The whole point of the app is to let you put together the interface that *you* want to use, and being able to manipulate windows quickly and efficiently is an important first step.

When you've put together a window arrangement that you like, you may lock it by choosing "Lock Interface" from the Window menu. Once locked, windows may not be moved or resized- they may, however, be toggled open or closed. If you choose "Totally Lock Interface" from the Window menu, in addition to the window position becoming locked, the open / closed state can not be changed and the disclosure triangles are hidden.
