Triggering Movies

There are three ways to activate or "trigger" cells. When triggering a cell in the Media GRID, it will be loaded into the targeted movie player module. The targeted movie player is indicated by the video camera icon. You can quickly switch which movie player will accept the next played movie by clicking on the target bus button next to the desired movie player.

Clicking

When using the Trigger tool, simply click on any cell in the Media GRID to activate it.

Keyboard

The Media GRID is broken up into 12 columns and 5 rows. Movies on the currently selected row can be triggered by using the QWERTY row of the keyboard, where Q is mapped to the movie in the first column, W is mapped to the second column, etc.

The number keys on the keyboard can be used to change the currently selected row. You can also change the current row by using the up and down arrow keys.

MIDI

MIDI notes can be used to trigger movies on the current page. To configure your MIDI settings, first open the GRID Pro preferences pane (accessible in the File menu) and click on the MIDI tab. Under Notes Triggering Movies will be a menu listing the available MIDI devices available to GRID Pro. Using the channel picker, you can set GRID Pro to listen only for MIDI notes on a single channel. To listen to all channels, set to 0.

By default, a note of 0 will trigger the first cell. However, because most MIDI keyboards can not be transposed down to 0, you can set a note offset in the GRID Pro preferences pane. You can manually set the transposition, or have GRID Pro set this value for you. To have GRID Pro set the transposition, click the DETECT button and then press the lowest note on your keyboard.

Bus-Targeted Triggering

When using Bus-Targeted Triggering, you can trigger movies in the left movie player (Bus A) by clicking on the left side on a thumbnail and trigger movies in the right movie player (Bus B) by clicking on the right side of a thumbnail. This will override your current target bus selection.

Bus-Targeted Trigger is OFF by default and can be turned on in the General Settings section of the Grid Pro preferences.

Controlling playback

Transport Controls

Each movieplayer contains transport controls for adjusting the playback of movies. There are two transport controls, one for each movie that is playing (we sometimes refer to these as bus A and bus B). Using a QWERTY keyboard you can only control one set of transport controls at a time because there are so many parameters to control.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Many of the transport controls can be controlled from the keyboard. Above the Mixer is an arrow for indicating which transport control is currently receiving the keyboard controls. The keyboard short-cuts are as follows:

Using MIDI

For each bus, the speed, position, volume, and balance sliders can all be mapped to MIDI data. You can synchronize a slider in the transport controls to a MIDI device as follows:

Click on the slider (eg. speed) you wish to assign MIDI to Click on the Sync tab in the Inspector (keyboard shortcut CMD + "2") Click on detect MIDI Move the slider / knob / note / pitch-bend you wish to assign. For more information on synchronizing sliders, see the section on syncing sliders

Remembering Clip Settings

By default, when a movie is loaded into a bus, the current transport settings will be used automatically. However, you can save settings with a cell to override the transport settings. To remember a setting for a particular cell, simply toggle the Save Last button next to parameter you wish to store.

In & Out point are stored with the loop-mode settings

Other playback settings

Quantized Triggering

When using GRID Pro, you may find it useful to delay the triggering of a movie so that it starts playing in sync with the GRID Pro clock. This is particularly useful when you have synced your clock to another piece of software over MIDI (for more information on the clock see the chapter on the clock). To activate Quantized Triggering, simply click on the toggle button in the Toolbar, or select Quantized Triggering from the Playback Settings menu.

Frame Blending

When using movies that have low frame rates, you can use Frame Blending to interpolate between frames giving the appearance of a higher frame rate.

Pitch Stabilization

only works with QuickTime 6.5

When lowering the playback speed of a movie with an audio track the pitch will get lower and when you speed up that movie the pitch of the audio will become higher. With pitch stabilization engaged the pitch (or "key") will always remain the same.

Cut to Black on End

Set this option if video should cut to black instead of stopping on the last frame of the current clip when using the Play-Once loop-mode.

Play Next / Play Previous

To trigger the next or previous cell in the Media GRID, relative to the highlighted cell for the currently targeted bus, use the keyboard shortcuts shift + ' and shift + ; respectively.

Play Random Cell

on current line / on current page

Using the keyboard shortcuts opt + ; and opt + ', a random movie on the currently selected line or the currently selected page will be triggered into the target bus.

Fade or cut to Black or White

At any time during performance, you can fade your final video output to black or white by holding option and pressing the "-" or "+" keys respectively. The amount of time for the fade will be the same as the current crossfade time set in the mixer. To cut to black or white instead of fading, hold shift instead of option.
