Optimizing Grid Pro

The Mixer module is used to combine the video in Bus A with the video in Bus B. The standard transition is the classic Additive Dissolve, but GRID Pro comes with a bunch of other more exotic transitions. Most transitions have parameters that can be customized to your own personal aesthetic.

Contents

Mixer Position Slider

Sets the relative amount of each bus signal according to the active transition settings. When the slider is set to 0, mixer will only output the video playing in Bus A; and when set to 1, the mixer will only output the video in Bus B.

Auto Transition Mode

When using Auto Transition mode, triggering a cell will cause the mixer to fade automatically to the movie player playing the new movie. Once the transition has begun, the mixer will automatically swap the target movie player so that the next time a cell is triggered it can transition again.

You can change the amount of time it will take to fade from one movie to another using the fade time slider below the mixer position slider.

Auto Layer Mode

In Auto Layer mode, the targeted bus is considered to be in the foreground, while the opposite bus is in the background. New movies are always loaded to the foreground and unlike auto-transitions mode, the target bus does not switch when movies are triggered.

When a new cell is triggered, the mixer will fade out the old foreground movie until only the background layer is showing. Then the foreground old movie will be replaced by the new cell and the mixer will begin auto-fading back to the foreground layer.

The background movie can be changed by temporarily switching the target bus to the background and then triggering the new background movie. Once the background movie has been faded out, just switch the target bus to its former setting.

Manual Mode

In Manual Mode, no events occur automatically when cells are triggered. It is still possible to use the timed auto-fade feature using the left and right arrow keys and the target movie player can be swapped by clicking on the picture of a motion picture camera next to each bus (CMD + L swaps).

Customizing Transitions

Editing Transition Settings

Using the Editing Window in the mixer, you can easily access and customize the parameters of any transition module. To edit the settings of a transition mode without making it the active transition, use the scrolling list on the left side of the mixer. Once selected, the controls specific to the chosen module will appear in the edit window.

The name of the currently viewed transition module will appear above the list on the left next to the word "SHOW".

Some transition modules contain 3-point bezier function editors for adjusting parameters such as gain levels which change as the mixer goes from left to right. In most cases, the red curve is used to represent the gain of the left bus and the blue curve represents the gain of the right bus. By default, both the red and blue curves will be linear ramps going from 1 to 0 and 0 to 1 respectively - that is, one movie fades in while the other fades out. To adjust either curve, simply click on a control point and drag it to a new location in the editor. Additional curvature points can be applied by holding option and clicking on a control point.

Setting the Active Transition

To set a transition type as the active transition, use the list on the right side of the mixer window. Clicking on the name of a transition mode will instantly make it the active transition and the edit window will automatically switch to display the selected mode.

The name of the currently active transition module will appear above the list on the right next to the words "SHOW & USE".
